First Listen to the Latest From U2

Well it's that's time again... everyone's favorite Irish political band is back with a new album... hard to believe it's been 5 years. I've been a fan of U2 for a long time now... a really long time and although I'll agree that some of their works are not quite as consistent as some of the others, I always find something artistic and valuable on every album, far beyond just the regular singles. This means of course, that I decided to check out the first single "Get On Your Boots" from the band's upcoming album No Line On the Horizon.

Guitarist Series: Thoughts on Effects...the Use and Abuse

For the uninitiated, or even those who play a different instrument, the world of the electric guitar can be massively confusing and intimidating. Just take a quick browse through the Guitar Center website (www.guitarcenter.com). You'll find what might even appear to be a ridiculous number of different guitar from all sorts of makers, many of which would appear almost identical except to the most discerning eye.

The Soul of Rock and Roll Welcomes the New President of the United States: President Obama

It's been quite a historic day here in the States. Fittingly the day after we take a holiday to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, the first African American President, Barack Obama, was sworn into office... and there was much rejoicing across the world.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day as today is the day we celebrate this great hero of the Civil Rights movement here in the States. In these trying times I think it's even more important than ever to keep the ideals of Dr. King in mind so that we can all learn to live together, peaceful, respectful of each of our differences.

Cheap Trick Live in Chicago 1981

Sometimes there are one hit wonders and they truly are just that. They had a moment when their songwriting skills peaked, and then unfortunately spent a good part of their career trying to recapture that initial moment. Then there are other "one or two hit wonders" or "Best of bands" (bands where their best of collections are all that are worth listening to) who have been unfortunately given these titles by pop culture, mainstream media, "music historians" and plenty of other people who consider themselves musically enlightened.

A Brief Tribute to Stooges Guitarist Ron Asheton

Unfortunately tragedy has struck the rock and roll community yet again. Earlier this week Ron Asheton, guitarist for the Stooges was found dead in his home, apparently from a heart attack at age 60.

Rock and Roll Feature: The Original Masters of Reality, Black Sabbath

This is the twenty-third in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month.

Carnival of Rock and Roll - January 2009

The time has finally arrived... the big spectacular event... the very first Carnival of Rock 'n' Roll of 2009. It certainly took long enough, two months of collecting submissions, and a lengthy number of days reviewing them (part of why this is running on the 5th and not the 1st as expected), but the results are pretty cool, so let's get right down to it.

Happy New Year from the Soul of Rock and Roll 2009

Well, it seems like only yesterday it was 2008... and actually it was. Yep, another hectic, but productive year in the books, and a new one already underway. It's looking to be an exciting musical year in 2009, and so the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll is going to start if off right with a the first Carnival of Rock 'n' Roll in the next few days... so make sure to check back.

Here's hoping everyone out there had a safe New Years Eve, had fun and is ready to start a new year.

Happy New Years from the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll.

Take care,
