Cream Live on the Glen Campbell Show 1968

Sometimes it's amazing how the arrangement of a song can completely change the feel... or even something as small as the guitar timbre. Maybe this is why guitarists spend so much time searching for their perfect guitar tone; to create that perfect mood for the song. Changes to that tone though, or to the arrangement of a song, does not always have to produce undesirable results. In many cases, if the song is strong and the musicians talented, the song can morph into something new that stands on it's own, just as well as the original.

Rock and Roll Feature: The Screaming Trees, Straight Out of the Sweet Oblivion

This is the twentieth in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month.

Why the Smashing Pumpkins Still Rock: Gish Box Set and Tour on the Way?

I can understand if some people are not a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe it's the sound, or the style, or whatever... I can understand. I however feel that they're one of the best bands in the world... probably in my top 5 of favorite bands (if I actually kept such lists around for easy reference). On top of my obvious appreciation for their music, I have a ton of respect for Billy Corgan because he seems to really be in it for the love of the music, and for the fans, and that respect continues with the new upcoming releases scheduled for the band.

Why is Hendrix the Guitar Master: Part 3 - Passion and Soul

So much goes into making an amazing guitarist. Technique, innovation, complexity, subtlety... a whole bunch of things. There's something though that can take those techniques and really put them over the top, making good guitarists into great guitarists , great guitarists into stellar guitarists and Jimi Hendrix (an amazing guitarist) into THE guitar master. This "special something" is one of the most illusive of things, but something that many guitarists spend their entire life striving for... especially blues guitarists: It's passion and soul.

Why is Hendrix the Guitar Master: Part 1 - Innovative Technique

I don't really remember the first time I heard the name Jimi Hendrix. He was always one of the artists I just seemed to know about from day one... as was his legendary prowess on the electric guitar. I don't really remember the first time I heard a Hendrix song either, but I do remember the first Hendrix album I bought, and the subsequent days I spent listening to it, soaking in as much as I possibly could. Suddenly all the stories of this infamous guitarist were true... I knew he was the guitar master and I never really even thought to question why.

Why is Hendrix the Guitar Master: Part 2 - Subtle Beauty

When it comes to guitarists, sometimes the best aspects of a great player's music goes completely unrecognized by the masses. Sure, playing a flaming guitar with your teeth has a bit of a bigger impact than crafting a beautiful rhythm part, but both are equally important when discussing what makes certain guitarists great.

Rock and Roll Feature: In the Court of the Crimson King

This is the nineteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month.

Zappa Plays Zappa: DVD Giveaway

I was lucky to be offered the opportunity to do something with the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll I have not done before. It's a special event to give something back to the readers... a contest giveaway.

Partnering with Big Honcho Media, the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll is going to be giving away a number of copies of the new Zappa Plays Zappa DVD set. I'm pretty interested in this DVD release myself as I heard that the ZPZ tour was just incredible, critically acclaimed and a lots of fun, so I thought that being able to give away a few copies to some lucky Zappa fans would be pretty cool.
