Soul of Rock and Roll Turns One!

in

Well I've been so busy recently that I almost missed the 1st anniversary of the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll site being up and running. Technically I was running sites like this for longer, but this music blog really got off the ground in February of 2007... one long year ago. It was February 25 actually, but oh well.

In the Wake of Another School Shooting

in

After the Virginia Tech tragedy, I felt inspired to take a moment to explore the possibilities of artistic outlets saving lives. You can read that article here if you missed it before as I think it might be equally applicable to the recent Nothern Illinois University shootings: Reflecting on a Tragedy: Can Artistic Outlets Save Lives?

Happy Valentines Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

There are plenty of songs dedicated to love and significant others out there, so you shouldn't have any problem fining the perfect soundtrack form this Valentine's Day. Personally I like "Maybe I"m Amazed" by Paul McCartney as one of my favorite romantic rock and roll songs, but there are thousands more.

Whether you have a rock and roll filled one or otherwise, make your Valentine's Day a memorable one.

Happy Valentines from the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll. Take care,

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

I consider Martin Luther King Jr Day to be one of our most important holidays here in America. Racism is still a major cultural problem that needs to be addressed as much as possible to prevent prejudice and promote equality. Music can take a very active role in this (and actually has on many different sides of race issues) and I believe it can help make a difference. Organizations like Love Music Hate Racism are taking an active position but I think even simple songs themselves can make a difference.

Happy New Years from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

Well, 2007 has come and gone and today (or actually tomorrow) we embark on a new year, 2008. Looking back on 2007, there were some incredible rock and roll events: Led Zeppelin reuniting, Radiohead releasing an album basically for free online, and all the rest including the one especially important to me, the birth of the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll website.

Happy Holidays from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

During this holiday season I hope that you all get more than a few music/rock and roll related gifts. I know I had more than a few on my list that I'm hoping for. Although gifts are nice I more so hope that everyone just has a joyous time with friends and family as that is really what the holidays are all about. If some rock and roll is involved though... all the better.

Be safe and have fun. Happy holidays from the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll.

Take care,

D.A.N.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

I think I'll just wish everyone here in the USA a happy Thanksgiving today.

I can't think of any songs that really fit in with the Thanksgiving spirit so no suggestions on holiday music today... maybe something like Vivaldi, but I don't think that counts as rock and roll. The day after though you can start playing Jingle Bell Rock though as I'm sure the media will start going full bore with the Christmas spirit as soon as they can. Here in Chicago we already have radio stations playing non-stop Christmas music... crazy.

Happy Veterans Day from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

I couldn't believe I almost forgot today was Veterans Day here in the US so I'd like to take this time to offer pay tribute to all veterans from every war that has happened, is happening and will happen in the future.

Just because you may not support the war or the ideology behind it does not mean that you shouldn't respect, appreciate and pay tribute to those who are willing to put their lives on the line for something they believe in.

Happy Halloween from the Soul of Rock and Roll

in

Wishing all you rock and rollers out there a happy Halloween.

There's some great Halloween rock tracks around that can help you celebrate just as much as eating large quantities of candy, like say... "The Monster Mash"... a track that has actually achieved pretty mythic status in our culture.

Still, whether your holiday includes some killer music or not, be safe and have fun.

Take care,

D.A.N.

Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs from the Soul of Rock and Roll!

in

It may not be rock and roll related, or even music related (right now I don't care), but I'd like to take today to congratulate the Chicago Cubs on clinching the National League Central Division Championship last night.
